Maths

Mathematics is a subject that all students need. In addition to the acquisition of vital numeracy skills needed for the future, it is also a field that should be enjoyed.

It is the aim of the Maths department that all students become fluent and confident with Mathematics. The study of Mathematics can provide answers to everyday questions that cannot be solved in any other way. More than just being a subject and qualification which is required at school, it is a subject of wonder and joy. Problems are used in lessons to provide enjoyment and foster creativity. 

At KS3 level there is a big focus in the lessons on becoming fluent with the basic skills before progressing on to reason answers, in slightly different context and then problem solving in an unfamiliar or unusual way.  

Problem solving now makes up a key role in the National curriculum and in exams at all levels. It is for this reason that we train the students to attempt questions in different ways and we build up the ability of the pupils to become resilient and persevere with the work, even when it seems difficult. 

The aims and objectives of the Mathematics GCSE are to enable students to: 

  • develop fluent knowledge, skills and understanding of mathematical methods and concepts 
  • acquire, select and apply mathematical techniques to solve problems
  • reason mathematically, make deductions and inferences, and draw conclusions
  • comprehend, interpret and communicate mathematical information in a variety of forms appropriate to the information and context. 

 

The study of the GCSE material begins in year 9 and during the three years the students cover the following six areas: 

1 Number 

2 Algebra 

3 Ratio, proportion and rates of change 

4 Geometry and measures 

5 Probability 

6 Statistics
